Top Self-Care Advice During a Holiday Breakup, According to a Breakup Coach

If going through a breakup wasn’t tough enough, going through a holiday breakup has to be the salt to the wound.

I’ve been there, and it’s tough because you’re not sure you want to tell everyone what’s going on with you, but at the same time, you’re not sure how to respond to, “so, you and [ex’s name] have any trips planned for next year?”

This is why we need self care. Part of my vision as a breakup coach is to build awareness around the importance of self care.

Self care helps recharge out proverbial batteries, and it’s mandatory, not optional.

Most of us lead jam-packed lives, so giving ourselves time during the holidays—and our breakups—helps us return to our every-day lives without all the stress.

Again, we need self-care.

So, clear your schedule today, and let’s check out some of these ideas below.

CHOOSE YOUR PARTIES WISELY

I’m such a firm believer in discovering and creating healthy boundaries. Especially during the holidays, we can feel obligated to attend every part we’re invited to; or attend parties where you haven’t seen the guests in years. Quite frankly, there’s nothing more uncomfortable than having to step into a room full of people who are going to ask you, “are you still seeing..” or, “it’s okay to be single!”

Choose which parties make you want to attend, with people you love and appreciate, who also support and love you.

CREATE A HOLIDAY MOVIE LIST

I repeat: skipping the holiday commotion to stay in, sip from vino, and watch your favourite classics or Hallmark movies is an incredibly healing experience.

The Holiday with Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz is a classic I watch every year, but I also loved Holiday in the Wild with Kristin Davis (Sex and the City) was such a great one.

CREATE A SELF-CARE AMBIANCE

Feel good about staying during the holidays by creating the most relaxing ambience ever. Grab a good book, light some candles (I’ve recently started making my own soy candles) and put on this 10-hour Fireplace crackling video on your laptop or TV. And don’t forget to grab my FREE self-care workbook for breakups here.

If you’re feeling anxious, stressed, or just exhausted from all the noise and chaos of the holidays—this is the perfect evening in.

You can also put this video on while you’re connecting with a friend over some wine or hot cocoa.

HOLIDAY FITNESS PROMOS

Whether you want to go to a studio to release those endorphins, or prefer to work out at home, there’s a TON of holiday promos to take advantage of.

For reasons you already are aware of, exercise helps to build confidence, reduce stress, and release pent up energy—the perfect activity when you’re going through a really intense breakup. (Is there any other kind?)

Here’s 2 apps I strongly suggest you check out!

Down Dog (Yoga at home) — you never get the same class twice so you’ll never feel like you’re just repeating yourself. I got mine at a discount of $19.99 after the trial so watch for promos!

MyFitnessPal (Tracking fitness) — if creating new fitness routines and tracking your food and exercise is part of your #newyearsresolutions, this might just be the app for you. I’ve used it for years and it really helps remind you of all the hard work you’re putting into your fitness.
